The following is an abbreviated description of our school from our Spring 2005 School Accountability Report Card (SARC).  You can find more detailed information in the complete report.

Principal’s Statement

KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy offers students and parents in southeastern San Diego a new alternative---a small, college-preparatory public school.  The mission of KIPP Adelante is to ensure that our students develop the academic skills, intellectual habits, and character traits needed to succeed in top-quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world beyond.  KIPP Adelante is a public charter school authorized through San Diego Unified School District.  We opened in downtown San Diego in 2003 to 80 fifth-grade students and will add a grade each year until we reach our full capacity of 320 students in grades 5-8.

Our instructional program is based on the success of the nationally-acclaimed KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) model.  There are 46 KIPP schools nationwide, proving that hard work, discipline, and dedication are the keys to success.  KIPP Adelante’s longer school day allows time for all academic subjects and enrichment activities in the arts and sports.  Because our focus is college preparatory, KIPP Adelante students will have visited 20 college campuses by the time they are promoted from eighth grade.  KIPP Adelante aims to serve those students who traditionally have not had the resources or opportunities to attend higher education.

Instruction and Curriculum

KIPP Adelante’s instructional program is rigorous and aligned with California academic content standards.  Daily, students receive two hours of instruction in language arts, two hours in mathematics, and one hour each of science and history/social sciences.  Our afternoon enrichment program exposes students to a variety of arts and sports, including orchestra, modern art, choir, and soccer.

Opportunities for Parent and Community Involvement

We recognize that many of the parents of our students work two and three jobs to provide for their families.  As such, we ask parents to join us as partners in their child’s education in simple, yet meaningful ways.  For example, we ask that our parents ensure their child arrives to school on time every day, is dressed appropriately in the school uniform, and calls their teacher if there are any questions on the homework. We also ask that the parent signs their child’s homework agenda every night and maintains open, respectful communication with the school.  In these ways, our parents demonstrate their support of their child’s education. Of course, some parents choose to join us in other ways by volunteering in the school’s office and by joining us on our end-of-year trips as chaperones.

Furthermore, we know that public education is truly a community endeavor, and KIPP Adelante welcomes the involvement for the wider community.  Our small school has benefited from the generosity of over 100 volunteers who have tutored, helped with facilities projects, and taught enrichment classes.
