that describes some of the reasons Mr. Adriaan was chosen for this award.
*On May 11, 2006, KIPP
Adelante was featured once again on
KPBS Radio 89.5. This time it was in recognition of Mr. Adriaan for
being one of two educators in San Diego to be honored with a 2006 Disney Teacher
Award.
To be cited, schools must
first qualify for the Distinguished Schools program, which considers test
scores, parent participation and learning environment. About 5 percent of
California's schools are so honored each year, according to the State Department
of Education.
*KIPP Adelante's selection as a
California Distinguished School for 2006 was featured on
KPBS Radio 89.5 FM on April
25, 2006:
Twenty elementary schools in San Diego County have been recognized as
distinguished schools in California. State Superintendent Jack O'Connell
released his annual list of top-notch public schools today. One school that made
the list is KIPP-Adelante Academy in downtown San Diego. KPBS reporter Ana
Tintocalis explains why.
*KIPP Adelante was named a
California Distinguished School
in April 2006. The California School Recognition
Program "honors some of the state's most exemplary and inspiring public schools.
Schools selected for Distinguished School Awards are strong, well-rounded
community schools." KIPP Adelante was one of only 20 San Diego County
Schools (and 5 San Diego Unified Schools) selected for this honor.
*KIPP Adelante Faculty and Board of
Directors member St. Claire Adriaan was honored as a
Teacher Who Made A Difference
through the University of Kentucky College of Education on March 25, 2006.
Mr. Adriaan was nominated by a KIPP Adelante student, Ashlyn Dowling '15.
The SSR compares a school with
the 100 schools in the state most similar to it in student poverty, ethnicity,
mobility, percentage of English-speaking students and percentage of teachers who
do not have a teaching credential. Each school is ranked on a 10-point
scale.
*KIPP
co-founders Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin and KIPP students in Washington, DC,
and Houston, TX, were featured on the
Oprah Winfrey Show on Wednesday, April 12, 2006:
In Washington, D.C., CNN's Anderson Cooper
found a school that has turned students' lives around. "Most of these kids were
two grades behind when they transferred here from some of the lowest performing
schools in the country," he says. "Now they're outscoring every public middle
school in Washington."
The school is called KIPP—short for Knowledge Is Power Program—part of a growing
network of schools around the country. It's the brainchild of Mike Feinberg and
Dave Levin, two Ivy League grads and Teach for America alumni who thought they
could do a better job than the public school system.
Now with 46 KIPP schools across the country, they're out to prove that they are
right.
*In June 2005,
small WORLD Podcasts
interviewed some of the students at KIPP Adelante and recorded them reading from
the haikus they wrote for their poetry flags on display at the historic El Cortez
building in San Diego.
*On May 27, 2005,
La Prensa
San Diego praised University of San Diego graduate Patrice Amon for her
effort in establishing KIPP Allstars, an after-school program for KIPP
Adelante girls that uses sports and theatre arts to help boost middle
school girls' self-esteem and fight childhood obesity.
Among the
most effective [people present at the April 19, 2005 San Diego City Council
meeting regarding the new Central Library] were 3 of 28 students who came from
the KIPP Adelante School in downtown San Diego. They were so eloquent,
sincere, and very appealing. One boy said with new books and a new
library, children would respect rather than damage books like they do now.
*Last year, KIPP Adelante's API jumped
125 points to 754. KIPP Adelante students’ most recent test scores—as shown in the graphs below,
which compare our scores with those of the schools our students previously
attended--demonstrate that although there is still much room for improvement,
their hard work is paying off.
*KIPP Adelante has been the
single school featured at the education seminar of
LEAD San Diego for the region's
leaders for the past three years.
Established in 1981, LEAD

Sometimes a few seconds can make a difference. So for the first seconds after
students enter a new downtown charter school, they're funneled down a narrow
corridor toward a sign with the message "Focus. Focus. Focus."
