Exposure to Opportunities Year-End Field Lessons
Aligned with our college-preparatory school focus, KIPP Adelante ensures that students are exposed to a wide variety of college campuses throughout their middle-school years. While our students visit local universities throughout the school year, their main exposure to college life is during our end-of-year college visits as they travel throughout California, Washington, and Massachusetts. During these multi-day trips, students begin to visualize themselves as college students and the goal of earning a college degree becomes more tangible and attainable to them. While on our end-of-year college visits, students, teachers, and parent chaperones also explore the city’s cultural venues, linking daily classroom learning to hands-on experiences. Highlights of these trips are plentiful. Below are a few examples:

Los Angeles
Fifth-graders travel to Los Angeles to tour some of Southern California’s top universities such as Occidental College, to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the University of Southern California (USC). KIPPsters also participate in hands-on experiments at the California Science Center/IMAX and learn about the unique histories of diverse cultures at the Museum of Tolerance.
San Francisco
Sixth-graders spend time in the San Francisco Bay Area where they visit a few of California’s most prestigious universities including Santa Clara University, Stanford University, and University of California at Berkeley. They also experience the Exploratorium: the museum of science, art and human perception, Alcatraz Island, Chinatown and walk across the majestic Golden Gate Bridge.

Pacific Northwest
Seventh-graders at KIPP Adelante head to the terrain of the Pacific Northwest. KIPPsters enjoy Seattle University and the University of Washington. This field lesson also features the unique opportunity to experience the natural classroom of the Olympic Park Institute (OPI) on the shores of Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park. At OPI, students engage in hands-on science and environmental lessons and have the opportunity to study natural wonders such as ancient forests and wilderness coasts.

Boston
Eighth-graders travel to the East Coast city of Boston to tour some of our Nation’s most distinguished universities including Harvard and Boston College. To foster a deeper understanding for the rich history of the American Revolution, KIPPsters walk the Freedom Trail, Boston’s indoor/outdoor museum of history. They also visit Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox and catch a glimpse of the Green Monster.
